Rodney, Bud, and Anya are all synths that lie somewhere in between Generation 2 and Generation 3. Much like Nick Valentine, they were prototypes that were no longer of any use to the Institute.
In their default state it is clear they are Generation 2 synths, but each one has the ability to cover their heads with an animated mask that would trick all but the most untrained eye to think they were a human. Over too long of a period, however, this will cause them to overheat, so they can only 'mask' for spans of time less than 2 hours.
To survive out in a wasteland that loves to hate synths, they began a life of gambling and petty crime. They however try their absolute best not to hurt anyone, just take their bottlecaps.
One of their favorite schemes is to have Anya play the role of cute young woman and ask to travel with a caravan for safety. He goal is to figure out which caravans have the supplies they need, and then to gain the sympathy of the gaurds. Anya will then signal Rodney and Bud, who will hold up the caravan and hold Anya as a hostage.
The goal of this plan is to have the caravan gaurds back down peacefully to save the life of this young girl, and then Rodney and Bud can leave with the goods.
Eventually they run into a man called 'The Mechanist' who is building a robot army. The Mechanist loves all robots and doesn't like other humans. He teaches the three to be proud of being robots and not try to pretend to be anything else. For the first time in their lives they learn to not hate what they are. For this reason, they will follow the Mechanist to hell and back if he were to ask.
Ironically, the Mechanist tries to play like the tough mastermind of an evil army and pulls more and more reckless tasks to impress his new friends. In reality however, Rodney, Bud, and Anya are not really into the whole evil army thing, they just like having a place where they are appreciated when the rest of the wasteland hates them for being what they are.
When the Mechanist is defeated by the Silver Shroud, they stay by his side, releived that all the arch villian activities are done. If the player invites the Mechanist to his settelment afterwards, Rodney, Bud, and Anya will set up a gambling den for the settlers and travelers to come to.
